Atlético breaks its silence: new surprise in Álvarez's fate | Goal.com

Atletico Madrid settled their position on the future of Argentina's Julian Alvarez back in June. The club set a deadline for the player and his agent to submit an offer worth 150 million euros, then closed the door completely on his departure, whether to Barcelona or any other club.
According to the Spanish newspaper "AS", Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin set 20 June as the deadline for Alvarez and his agent Fernando Hidalgo to present an offer worth 150 million euros. That money never actually reached the club, despite the player expressing his desire to leave during the preceding months.
Real Madrid had announced their interest in signing Alvarez for 150 million euros on 9 June, but Atletico confirmed the offer never reached them officially and that no negotiations took place over the deal. Real Madrid's contact, they pointed out, was limited to two phone calls to enquire about the player's situation.
Their move prompted a sarcastic response from Atletico, who posted a comment through their official accounts that read: "You make us laugh more than Barcelona", in reference to the club's anger at the way Barcelona handled the Argentine striker's file.
Once the deadline passed on 20 June, Atletico closed the door on Alvarez's departure for good. The club's board consider the Argentine striker a key element of the team's project, and see no suitable replacement in the transfer market capable of compensating for him.
Just two days later, Alvarez publicly announced his desire to leave Atletico. The step stirred discontent among the club's board, especially as officials believe Hidalgo handled the matter in a way that further complicated the situation.
Tension between Atletico and Barcelona has grown over the past period. The Madrid club accused their Catalan rivals of dealing with the Alvarez file in an unacceptable manner, and the matter reached the point of a complaint being submitted to FIFA and the Spanish federation, a move that reflects the scale of the dispute between the two sides.
Alvarez's mission to leave Atletico now appears to have reached a dead end. The club insisted on keeping him while the player preferred a move to Barcelona, leaving him facing a new challenge: dealing with the anger of Atletico's fans and attempting to repair his relationship with coach Diego Simeone.
