Manchester City Have Assembled The First Billion Euro Squad In History

English Premier League champions Manchester City have put together the first €1 billion squad in history after their spending during the summer.

That is according to data from the Centre for Sports Studies (h/t Bleacher Report) and includes both transfer fees and add-ons. The Etihad side spent a total of €168 million this past summer, having purchased the likes of Rodri and Joao Cancelo, who cost €70 million and €65 million respectively.

City’s spending sees them sit atop the charts where it pertains to the total transfer fees plus add-ons for their squad. French Giants Paris Saint-Germain are behind in the second spot after spending €104 million during the most recent transfer period. The Ligue 1 outfit purchased Abdou Diallo for €32 million and Idrissa Gueye for €30 million.

La Liga’s Real Madrid are third after bringing in Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic, Ferland Mendy, Eder Militao and Rodrygo for a total of €308 million.

The top 20 biggest spenders are listed below:

  • 1. Manchester City, €1,014 million
  • 2. PSG, €913 million
  • 3. Real Madrid, €902 million
  • 4. Manchester United, €751 million
  • 5. Juventus, €719 million
  • 6. Barcelona, €697 million
  • 7. Liverpool, €639 million
  • 8. Chelsea, €561 million
  • 9. Atletico Madrid, €550 million
  • 10. Arsenal, €498 million
  • 11. Everton, €486 million
  • 12. Tottenham Hotspur, €465 million
  • 13. AC Milan, €408 million
  • 14. Inter Milan, €364 million
  • 15. Bayern Munich, €352 million
  • 16. AS Monaco, €348 million
  • 17. Napoli, €325 million
  • 18. Borussia Dortmund, €321 million
  • 19. Leicester City, €312 million
  • 20. Valencia, €266 million

For all of their spending, City can argue that it’s been worth it. The team has won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup over the past two seasons and are on course to win a third league title under Spanish tactician Pep Guardiola.

They’re 4/11 favourites to win the top flight with Betfair despite Liverpool threatening at every turn. The bookmakers have 5/2 on odds on Jurgen Klopp’s Reds usurping the defending champs, while you could pick up a 50/1 bet on Tottenham Hotspur fashioning an upset. New bettors can claim £20 in free bets up to five times with said bookies and this is why Betfair is the best bookmaker for you.

Man City are also expected to challenge for the Champions League this season and, with the competition set to kick off next week, they’ll be opening their campaign with an away fixture at Shakhtar Donetsk on September 18. Betfair are offering 3/10 on a City win, 9/2 on a draw, and 9/1 on the home team winning.

Guardiola’s men are also favourites to lift the big-eared trophy next May. Betfair have them to win the European competition at 16/6 while Spanish supremos Barcelona have 9/2 odds attached to their name. Last season’s winners Liverpool are 11/2, Madrid are 15/2, and PSG are 17/2.

While they’ve been spending big over the years, City haven’t been generating much from sales and neither have PSG. Real have been doing much better when it comes to sales and only Monaco, Chelsea, Juventus and Benfica have made more money from transfers than Los Blancos’ €763 million in the last 10 years.
