David Beckham’s very own Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion team is due to begin its inaugural campaign in just a matter of days, when they face the long trip west to take on Los Angeles FC. A huge amount of planning has gone into this venture for Miami and Fort Lauderdale and Beckham’s brand and pulling power has been a major boost for the venture. It looks like bearing fruit in the years to come too as Brazilian star Neymar has confirmed he plans to play for Inter Miami in a “few years from now”.
Most leading US sportsbooks have Miami rated as outsiders to compete at the top end of the MLS in their inaugural season, with the likes of FOX Bet suggesting they should settle for a season of stability and building their fanbase. FOX Bet is one of the newest additions to the US sportsbook market and is already licensed in New Jersey to underpin in its burgeoning reputation. That might be a fair assessment given that Miami haven’t opted for many big-name acquisitions thus far, but things could change quickly if Neymar signs on the dotted line.
A contract is ready and waiting for Neymar in Miami
Neymar, who currently plies his trade for French Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint Germain, was seen chatting with Beckham at the recent Legends on Legends series staged by OTRO. There’s no doubt that Inter Miami has the potential to be one of the most interesting expansion teams for the MLS, with its glamorous lifestyle and weather having the potential to entice proven superstars of the game across the Atlantic. Beckham said tongue-in-cheek during the Legends on Legends discussion with Neymar that he had a contract on the table for the Brazilian “in ten years’ time”. Neymar didn’t appear to be joking when he said that he saw a move to Miami as “a great opportunity for the country to grow its soccer”.
Neymar has been in sizzling form for PSG so far this season, bagging 13 goals and six assists in just 14 Ligue 1 games. Although he is currently on the treatment table with an injury, PSG are well on course to win their seventh league title in eight years. As for Beckham and Miami, they still have vacant Designated Player spots waiting to be filled, with the likes of Manchester City playmaker David Silva and Neymar’s PSG teammate Edinson Cavani both thought to be under consideration for a lucrative switch from Europe to Florida.
