Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher vented his frustration after the Reds succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.
Paris Saint-Germain took a significant step towards the Champions League semi-finals with a valuable 2-0 victory over visitors Liverpool at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday evening in the first leg of the quarter-finals.
Speaking after the match, the former Reds defender launched a stinging critique of manager Arne Slot’s decision to field a back five, arguing that the cautious approach stifled Liverpool’s usual attacking flair and invited pressure from the hosts.
Speaking on CBS Sports, the former Reds defender said: “The manager tried to implement something, but he got it completely wrong tactically.”
He noted that, paradoxically, Liverpool looked more comfortable with a traditional back four than with this five-man setup.
However, it was Ibrahima Konaté’s performance that drew the most criticism from the former England international.
With characteristic bluntness, Carragher highlighted the Frenchman’s alarming inconsistency: “His performances have been disastrous all season, and once again it was poor tonight. He makes a mistake in every game.”
These scathing remarks contrast sharply with his more forgiving assessment of Virgil van Dijk, who, in his view, is being unfairly criticised.
Despite his harsh assessment, Carragher was quick to credit Paris Saint-Germain’s quality, drawing parallels with Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona.
