Donyell Malen starts the new Serie A season in fabulous fashion with a clinical hat-trick | Goal.com
Donyell Malen has kicked off the new Serie A season in style. On Monday night, the Dutchman inspired AS Roma to a thumping 4-0 win over Fiorentina with a clinical hat-trick. The result sends Roma top of the table.
Roma had already taken Malen on loan from Aston Villa for half a season last term. The forward made a huge impression in the capital, scoring 15 goals and adding three assists in 20 matches in all competitions.
That convinced Roma to sign him permanently from the English club last summer. Malen completed his move to Italy for a fee of €25 million.
They will not regret that any time soon. On Monday night, Malen stole the show straight away in the opening game of the new season.
Mario Hermoso had a goal ruled out for offside, but Malen made no mistake in the 27th minute. The striker took the ball in the box and bundled it into the net to make it 1-0.
Then he struck twice more in the second half inside a quarter of an hour. First, he lashed the 2-0 high into the near corner with his left foot. Soon after, he completed his hat-trick from a Paulo Dybala cut-back to make it 3-0. It also meant a hat-trick for Dybala, in assists.
Following a fully deserved ovation when he went off, Roma added one more. Niccolò Pisilli bundled in the 4-0 to put the cherry on the Roman cake.
