All the signs suggest that Mark Diemers will also be leaving SC Cambuur this summer. The key player has received a new offer from his current club, but this has left him far from optimistic, as revealed in a candid interview with ESPN.

Cambuur have already secured promotion, so the club can start preparing for the Eredivisie. However, the Frisians are also facing serious financial problems, making it a huge challenge to put together a quality squad. Oscar Sjöstrand has already been sold to Malmö FF for €2 million, and a transfer for Ismaël Baouf is also being worked on. A hefty fee is being demanded for him.

Now, a longer stay for Diemers also seems a distant prospect. “I don’t think it’s really up to me to say anything about that right now. The club has made me an offer and I want to leave it at that for the moment,” the midfielder told Mark van Rijswijk at ESPN.

“At the moment, that’s absolutely not promising, no,” Diemers admits. “We’re currently just very far apart in every respect, so we’ll see if anything comes of it. Would I prefer to go into the Eredivisie with Cambuur? Yes, but that has to work out for everyone involved. If it doesn’t, then I’ll chart my own course.”

Hans Kraay junior was then very shocked by Diemers’ interview in the ESPN studio. “He’s pissed off! I can tell from this that he’s absolutely furious that he isn’t being appreciated for what he’s shown. I can’t estimate how much money this is about, but he doesn’t feel appreciated.”

“If someone comes calling now, he’ll take the bait,” says Kraay Junior. “Then he’ll go to another club. It looks like a split, and it’s a really painful one. Because Diemers fits in there so perfectly, he fits in there so perfectly…”

Toine van Peperstraten believes that Cambuur has ‘grossly misjudged’ the costs of the new stadium, which has left the club in financial difficulties. Cambuur’s debt stood at around 45 million euros when the latest annual figures were published.

“I understand that a large proportion of the transfer fees, including those for Sjöstrand, can be reinvested in new players,” said Kraay junior. “But that’s essential; otherwise, you’ll be bottom of the table from day one next season.”
