Algerian playmaker Houssem Aouar finally silenced Al-Hilal’s curse when he stepped onto the pitch at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium in Jeddah for Wednesday’s Saudi Roshen League clash against Neom.

Aouar netted the hosts’ third goal in Wednesday’s encounter at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, as part of the 29th round of the Roshen League.

The goal arrived via a corner, which Danilo Pereira nodded across the face of an open goal for the Algerian to tap in.

The strike ended a 45-day goal drought during which the playmaker had gone without finding the net in any competition.

His last strike had come on 21 February, when he netted against Al-Hilal in Round 23 of the same competition.

During that run, he appeared in four league fixtures and one King’s Cup outing without finding the net. The drought had begun to fuel questions among fans and analysts alike, given his previous form and the hefty expectations that accompanied his move to Jeddah. Yet, rather than dwelling on the statistics, the 29-year-old focused on his work-rate and movement, trusting that another opportunity would eventually arrive. Against Neom, that patience paid off almost immediately. Less than 10 minutes after the restart, he was in the right place at the right time to finish a well-weighted header from Daniel Podence, who had nodded down a corner from the left. The simplicity of the finish belied the pressure on the forward, and his celebration—a mixture of relief and defiance—spoke volumes. For Union, the goal proved crucial as they secured a 3–1 victory that strengthened their grip on a top-four finish. With nine matches remaining, the club will be hoping that Ben Yedder’s long-awaited strike is the first of many, as they chase silverware and a return to continental competition.
