Atlético Madrid fans have ignited a major controversy ahead of the team’s clash with Barcelona in tonight’s first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.
All eyes are on a fiery clash in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, as Barcelona host their rivals Atlético Madrid in a rematch, just days after a heated La Liga battle that ended in a dramatic 2-1 victory for the Catalan side.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced on Tuesday that it had opened disciplinary proceedings against the Spanish Football Federation after fans made offensive chants about Islam during La Roja’s friendly against Egypt.
The match itself ended goalless, yet supporters inside the ground jeered during the Egyptian national anthem before launching verbal attacks on the faith.
The most virulent chant—“Whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim”—quickly spread online and is now under FIFA scrutiny.
Today, just hours before kick-off, Atlético supporters gathered outside the players’ hotel and roared anti-Barcelona slogans.
Those present also hurled insults at Islam, mirroring the earlier Egypt friendly.
Video evidence captured by Spanish newspaper Sport clearly shows supporters chanting “Whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim”, a phrase used in a clearly derogatory context.
