Barcelona's move insufficient: major setback in Rodri deal

A press report revealed on Tuesday a new development in Barcelona's pursuit of Manchester City star Rodri during the current summer transfer window.

The Catalans have tabled an offer worth 50 million euros, according to reports over the past few hours. Manchester City turned it down flat.

Spanish newspaper "Sport" reckons Barça are ready to push that figure to 60 million euros for the best player at the 2026 World Cup.

Even that sum falls short. City value their relationship with Barcelona, but they won't part with the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner, one of their most prominent players, for a paltry amount.

Any agreement between the two European giants remains out of reach, "Marca" reported on Tuesday. City have slapped a 70 million euro price tag on the 30-year-old, and nothing less will convince them to let him go, especially with the huge outlay they face to replace him.

Morocco's Ayoub Bouaddi (Lyon), whose transfer value will exceed 100 million euros (130 million euros according to the newspaper AS), and Enzo Fernández (Chelsea) sit high on City's list of targets. That is precisely why they demand a hefty fee for Rodri.

The Catalan club, though, have no intention of paying what the English side are asking. A meeting between Hugo Viana and Deco, the sporting directors of Manchester City and Barcelona, is due soon.

Barça had hoped Rodri would return on Wednesday to resume training. They may now be forced to wait.

The midfielder is expected to arrive in Manchester to resume training, unless Barcelona can lower his price and seal the deal in the coming hours.
